When my oldest son was 4 years old, he believed he was superman. And why wouldn’t he? He had the cape to prove it, and he did move faster than a speeding bullet. One day, donning his superman cape with the large red S on it, he flew by me with his heart a blazin’ and said, “Mom! I’m running so fast my spirit’s behind my body!”
He left me, his hurried and scurried mother, standing motionless in his trail of truth. When did my little man become so wise?
In our desiring to “save the world” and you know, be a superhero . . . we begin to run to and fro and yet we can still feel like we're not doing enough. We begin to feel superhero challenged, so to say.
On one shoulder we can hear Simon and Garfunkel serenading us, Slow down you move too fast . . . And on the other shoulder we have a very frantic rabbit chanting in our ear . . .You’re late, you’re late for a very important date.
Is there any surprise that we feel challenged?
Life can be so rich with opportunities, it can leave us feeling like we are running on a machine, a taffy-pulling machine that is. And we are the glistening piece of taffy being pushed and pulled in opposing directions.
"Go slow my soul, to feed thyself." said, Emily Dickinson. Emily's quote can be a wonderful mantra as well as a reminder that adrenal fatigue comes from being in a continual state of emergency. As the superman reminded us, "I'm running so fast, my spirit's behind my body." This fatigue happens when we are moving through life without our presence, our connection to the now, our connection to our soul. It’s because we have left our power behind, our fuel. I’ve contemplated on this and I realized that superman was right! For where is my power, where is your power? It is always right here in this moment.
So how do we keep our hearts and minds in the now, as well as our body aligned with our soul while reaching for the stars?
First, I believe that it begins by understanding that our greatest contribution to this planet is being and sharing from that state of presence and remembering, that I AM, the magnum opus that I’ve been trying to create. Desire for me signifies that I am lacking somehow, that I need to create something to validate my existence. Relaxing into being allows life to unfold naturally. It allows creations to birth from the fullness of presence and not the emptiness of desire. Presence allows me to feel complete, whole, and able to leap tall buildings (my ego) in a single bound and soar into the sunlit sky of freedom.
The next time you're feeling S-T-R-E-S-S and S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D and A-N-X-I-O-U-S…you know that feeling. The feeling that if you take one more step you might step off the edge of sanity into the great abyss never to be found again.
Well next time you are feeling and acting all SSA like, that is, for those with eyes to see “ASS” spelled backwards! LOL!
Put your hand on your heart and take a deep, conscious, loving belly breath, and say to yourself, “I have all the time in the world” (AAAH!...Take a moment to let that phrase sink in). Say it again, "I have all the time in the world" and allow the peace of God to fill your being.
Now I can hear your response, “but I don’t have all the time in the world!” I have to __________ and __________ and__________ and _________ and etc. Fill in the blanks as desired. Possibly you could fill a whole page with responsibilities resting on your shoulders. But I would like to remind you, that you and I, have been gifted with the same 24 hours in each day, but really truly, we are only and always gifted with nothing more than this moment. Yes, this moment, and this moment, and this moment, etc. Yet, the spirit of peace is optional.
